October 2026 blend of links
Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share the good stuff I encounter on the web.
❧
myNoise – Almost too good of a service/tool: I keep thinking “where is the catch?” but there doesn’t seem to be any.
Like dinosaur eggs in the sand: the pterosaur museum built to thrive in the Gobi desert – Fascinating building, in and out.
The Film Experience – In case you have time to spare, this looks way more interesting than the average YouTube video. (via Kottke)
Apple MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, with Touch – I guess a touchscreen MacBook solves one of the biggest problems with MacBooks: smudges on the screen from the keyboard when closed. Now, with a touchscreen, it’s very hard to blame the keyboard for those, so, problem solved?
Michael Tsai’s post on the MacBook Pro (PROLED XDR Display) – “I still don’t get it. I just don’t see any benefit to touching the screen—especially in order to zoom a picture. Ergonomics aside, touch seems slower (you have no acceleration or multiplier) and less precise to me. But I’m glad they’re happy.” Same thoughts here.
Open Source as We Know It Is Dead – “When generating a PR takes ten seconds and reviewing it properly takes thirty minutes, all you've done is shift the work from the person who wants something onto the person who has to say no - and the person saying no is almost always a volunteer who was already stretched thin. A.I. made contributing cheap. It didn't make maintaining any cheaper - if anything, it made it a lot more expensive.”
Protestors Criticized For Looting Businesses Without Forming Private Equity Firm First – “Look, we all have the right to protest, but that doesn’t mean you can just rush in and destroy any business without gathering a group of clandestine investors to purchase it at a severely reduced price and slowly bleed it to death.”
The Most Unsettling Books We Know – Superb topic idea for an article, and fantastic gift idea list. (via Daniel Benneworth-Gray)
Hotel Retro: Vintage Luggage Labels from Tokyo to Buenos Aires – Speaking of gift ideas, I think this book of fancy and gorgeous stickers will be gifted this year. (via Dense Discovery)
Google Search Is Dying. What Comes Next Is Worse – “At least book banning happens in your face: it has villains, school board meetings, sensational headlines. Digital erasure is more insidious and, in some ways, more devastating. A banned book can still be found. A scrubbed webpage can disappear so completely few people would ever realize it was there.”
