August 2024 blend of links
Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.
Facing the Nuclear Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki・Very moving and important reporting from Kathleen Kingsbury, W.J. Hennigan and Spencer Cohen. I find it a bit strange for the New York Times to have this great piece of journalism so heavily labeled as “opinion.”
Milk & Serial (found footage horror film)・I’ve just finished watching this 800-dollar 62-min movie, and I’m very impressed. The Guardian’s Stuart Heritage describes it as an “online phenomenon” and I can understand why. Also, it feels good to be part of that “phenomenon” and watching the movie while it’s still hot.
Laila Latif’s Emily in Paris season four review・”Creator Darren Star has made the only engaging character a middle-aged white dude who is succeeding despite phoning it in at his job. And that is not about nothing; that’s very telling”
T-Lab Japan wood carvings・My wife and I own a couple of these cute little hand-carved and hand-painted sculptures and I absolutely adore them. A little design store in Freiburg sells them, and every time we go there, we are tempted to add one more to our collection.
Dear Paul Graham, there is no cookie banner law・A nice reminder from Stephan Schmidt of why we have cookie banners everywhere on the web. I particularly like Schmidt’s idea of having the browsers themselves display the consent information rather than websites via ugly and annoying banners.
Wham! - Blue (Armed with Love) (Live on The Russell Harty Show, 1983)・This song doesn’t seem to be available in this form on streaming platforms, but this — I think — is the best version of it, even if a part is apparently cut off. I love the beat, and George Michael was already shining like the world-class star he was going to become.
Restaurant Iris, in Rosendal, Norway・Norm Architects did it again. Their interior design for this Michelin-starred restaurant is simply gorgeous and only matched by the surreal aesthetics of the exterior designed by Kvorning Design. Also worth mentioning, Norm Architects have the best photographers: many of the shots shared across their website can be used as beautiful desktop and phone wallpapers.
Songshift・I haven’t tried it myself but this service allowing one user to easily switch between Spotify and Apple Music might be useful to a few of you dear readers.
Radicalized by a soap dispenser・I read this post by Rachel J. Kwon and I found myself nodding my head in agreement all the way. “This is pretty much where my brain goes on a daily basis. I go for a bathroom break, the soap dispenser doesn’t work (a minor inconvenience for me, all told), and I immediately jump to “humanity is at risk.” Same.
Temu Shopper Disappointed By Quality Of $1 Blender・“What the hell? The app gives it a 4.9 rating, but the blades are all bendy and dull and it didn’t even come with a lid.”
