February 2024 blend of links
Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.
Japan is set to launch the world’s first wooden satellite to combat space pollution・Not from The Onion.
What’s Inside This Crater in Madagascar?・A very entertaining investigation. (via Kottke)
How Google is killing independent sites like ours・We often discuss SEO as a cat-and-mouse game with Google. While I don’t completely agree with the article’s conclusion that “the ball is in Google’s court” (as online advertising seems to never be at fault for decreasing revenues), I think the article makes a great point showing that the SEO game is actually played between a very nasty clowder and the most naive mouse pretending to be in control in an attempt to save face. (yes, I’ve used the word clowder)
Logo Rhythm・While we are on the topic of “comtent”, let me show you this great-looking book about band logos you will soon be able to buy — yes band not brand — by Jamie Ellul and Jim K Davies. (via Meanwhile)
A New Program for Graphic Design・Sometimes, I wonder if the “Blend of links” category isn’t actually a substitute for my own wishlist.
List of photographs considered the most important・I have spent way too much time on this page. It was worth it, though.
Invidious・You may already be familiar with Invidious, an alternative YouTube player that allows you to avoid tracking and the annoyances of the YouTube platform itself. The best read on the topic comes from Kev Quirk, who has gone the extra mile with his setup. (Although I don’t personally use my own instance, Kev’s approach looks like the best way to use Invidious.)
Spyglass・M.G. Siegler is someone I’ve been following online for a long time, and his new project is exactly what I anticipated him launching one day. A highly predictable outcome, in the best possible way.
Uniform, by Carl Barenbrug・I enjoyed reading this so much. I am kind of doing something similar actually, albeit much less advanced and thought through (I have a list of “pre-approved” good products I keep on buying once they wear out), but I especially like the one-in-one-out approach. This is the kind of minimalism I identify with.
How Many Plants - Indoor and House Plant Resource・A fantastic link to bookmark, if I’ve ever seen one.
