July 2024 blend of links

Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.

X Training Grok AI On Tweets Without Notifying Users・Not only is this a shitty move, but they decided to do it just before the Olympics officially start, hidden in the noise and profiting from the massive amounts of messages that will be published during the event. Meanwhile, every media company — as they learned to do years ago but still seemingly refuse to adapt and change –– keeps on promoting X via embedding tweets, and mostly tweets, in their stories, indirectly supporting a horrible, horrible person’s business and fascist agenda.

Horses - Official Announcement Trailer・If you ever wondered what a video game made by David Lynch would look like, look no further.

Stop Using Custom Web Fonts, by Bradley Taunt・”The “wow factor” of having a custom web font on a website is completely gone. Not to mention, recent trends see designers including terrible typefaces that actually make things more difficult to read and break basic accessibility. All of this for the sake of a company’s “brand”. I say: fuck your brand.

JS Paint・Microsoft Paint in your browser: it may be the first time that I have ever experienced nostalgia via software that isn’t a video game. (via Kottke)

Asian Food Dictionary・More websites like this, please: pretty, focused, and interesting.

100 of the Greatest Posters of Celebrities Urging You to Read・The whole of it could be a fancy exhibit that I would happily pay to visit. (via Meanwhile)

Superlist・People behind Wunderlist (which got bought by Microsoft to eventually become Microsoft ToDo) launched a new todo app, and this is already on my shortlist if one day I can’t use Things anymore at work (whether I use it in my personal life instead, or if I have to switch to a Windows PC).

Orion Browser・The company behind the search engine Kagi has made this browser based on Webkit, and I think it’s great: smart little features peppered across the UI, while keeping it simple and efficient. An interesting and well-designed middle ground between Safari and Safari with StopTheMadness Pro.

Google’s Exclusive Reddit Access・I think it’s great to see Google having to pay for access to content, but I think it’s terrible that this is an exclusive deal. This is not the first time that Google relies on outspending competitors to maintain its monopoly; Dare Obsanjo writes: “This pretty much kills any chance of disrupting Google with AI as they can outspend everyone on content exclusivity.” (via Michael Tsai)

251 words you can spell with a calculator.・Useless yet essential bookmark.
