October 2023 blend of links
Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.
Experience: a whale saved me from a shark attack・This series of stories in the Guardian has been very good, but I found this one particularly fascinating and moving.
Steve Jobs on the role of product and marketing people・In the last couple of weeks, I must have watched this video a dozen times: what he says hasn’t aged a bit (except for the part about toner).
Why can’t our tech billionaires learn anything new?・I’ve already written about Marc Andreessen’s awful manifesto, but if you’re going to read only one piece about it, it should be this one by Dave Karpf.
The Unbearable Slowness of Light・Another gem from Jason Kottke’s blog: the video makes you understand how fast a photon travels through space, and it is definitely not as fast as I thought.
Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will・My wife bought this for me as she knows I’m a sucker for anything maps-related and this book doesn’t disappoint. Just stunning to look at.
Itadakimasu-letmeeat, anime food・One of my favourite Tumblr blogs, and a collection of gifs you definitely shouldn’t look at when you’re hungry…
Removable Wallpaper, by Centre Pompidou・As beautiful and exquisite as it is expensive, although it is definitely being added on my wishlist.
TopAI.tools・A great resource for discovering new A.I. tools and apps, of which there are thousands to choose from. A site that will stay in my bookmarks for a while.
Butterick’s Practical Typography・Speaking of bookmarked sites, this online book by Matthew Butterick is my go-to when I have typography questions.
