January 2024 blend of links

Some links don’t call for a full blog post, but sometimes I still want to share some of the good stuff I encounter on the web.

Lions make fewer zebra kills due to ‘chain reaction’ of invasive ants, study finds – Ecology, the scientific discipline that studies the relationship between living organisms and their environment, has always been my favourite part of biology back when I was at university. This story confirms it.

America is the greatest country in the United States (Judah Friedlander) – One of my favourite one-man shows of the past decade, I keep rewatching it and can’t believe it will soon-ish become a decade old.

We Need Your Email Address – The must-read of the week as far as I’m concerned. The way most advertising on the web works — pushing for measurable engagement above everything else — has been hurting the media industry for years now — including journalism — to the point of indirectly threatening the foundation of democracy: well-informed citizens.

In Praise of Buttons – This link made me spend hours figuring out where I could use nice-looking buttons somewhere on this site. (via Michael Tsai)

Steve Jobs at the Center for Design Innovation — Aspen 1983 – I found this better than 80% of the podcasts out there. (via Matthew Panzarino)

Let’s Get Creative: “a collection of high-quality, free, online creativity tools.” – I love that all these little websites and web apps exist. A typical link to keep among your bookmarks.

Project V, by Caterham – I’ve always loved cars, but electric cars never really appealed to me: too heavy, too expensive, too big, too dull. This one is the first EV I actually desire, even if it’s way, way out of my price range.

Public.me – A neat idea from Anton Podviaznikov, the person behind the excellent Montaigne CMS: simply publish todos directly from the Reminders app.

Migrating from Substack to self-hosted Ghost: the details – Molly White shares a great tutorial for those still using Substack but wondering how to move away.

The Art of Pants – I recently discovered these weird, funny, and subtle little comic strips and I’m charmed. I know a few of them will have a space on the walls of our future flat. (via Do By Friday)
